
A Bilingual Design System: Richard Raya For D5
THE BRIEF
For the 2020 Oakland City Council District 5 election, the Richard Santos Raya campaign team needed a visual identity that would resonate deeply with the predominantly Latinx community of District 5.
THE SOLUTION
Grounded in the terracotta and lapis hues of Fruitvale Village —the cultural heart of the District 5 neighborhood, I created a visual system that incorporated type, color, and layout choices instill a strong sense of place and community pride amongst constituents. To support bilingual outreach, I implemented a dual color system to clearly differentiate English and Spanish messaging across all platforms. I also designed campaign merchandise, extending the identity into wearable, community-facing expressions.
